Pregnancy & Pain Killers

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

I've endured through tough pains throughout this pregnancy ranging from headaches, colds, fevers, allergies, sore muscles, breast tenderness, random nausea, leg cramps, ligament stretching, shortness of breath, and other mental challenges (mood swings, cravings, hunger) that accompany hormones in limbo in a pregnant body. Through it all the only medication taken was Robitussin during the spring season when I had the severe flu. Up until now I've avoided taking any prescribed or over the counter pain killers and resorted to natural remedies such as sleep, meditation,  tea, relaxing showers, massages, aromatherapy and exercise. These remedies usually did the trick.

The headaches started the morning of Halloween. At first it was bearable but it got increasingly worse through the following days turning into a migraine once the morning of day 3 came. Last night was one of the worst nights. It was difficult to get continuous sleep due to constant toilet visits every one to two hours - and it was much more difficult to fall back into sweet slumber with every pounding my head suffered. The experience was dreadful and agonizing. It was then a decision was made that out of desperation - the pain meds were necessary.

Comparable to the
Regular Strength Tylenol
My doctor recommended regular Tylenol to ease the pain (safe for pregnancy, but consult your doctor) - unfortunately there's that recall on Tylenol that has been going on since early this year. Apparently the pills omitted a malodorous odor deriving from some type of wood used when bottling the brand (per pharmacist). The next best thing was the generic version - Walgreen's Regular Strength Pain Reliever with acetaminophen - comparable to the regular strength Tylenol. I popped in two pills and within an hour the 3 day headache started to disappear. HALLELUJAH OH MY SOUL!!!

As much as I avoid pain killers at all costs, today was an exception. It also helped that my husband babied me, gave me massages, and cleaned the house. It's nice to be taken care of but it's wonderful to be pain free and be my old self again.
